Natal spearfishing champs 2026
Well peeps I didn’t think it was possible to top last years champs with nearly 50 entries for the 70th anniversary of the competition however with 60 entrants this year that thought was done and dusted!
What was awesome this year as well was getting some south coast diver’s to enter to level the playing field out! The results show that they definitely featured in the top 10 (Rudi and Kurt) and as it would turn out on Saturday the south coast conditions were quite a bit better than north coast with new Natal champ Heath Houston taking the honours with 9 weighers diving off Margate in 10 to 15m viz!
That’s not to say that north coast didn’t feature with cold 2 to 3m viz and pounding surf (Sean, Warren and Gareth). Even Ribbon tailed Ray’s were quite happy to tax your Bronze bream game changer fish in the bad viz hey Louis? Hahaha now that’s a hard luck story!
And that’s not mentioning the gale of a NE wind that picked up early bells and the gale of a SW wind that hampered prize giving at PWSC and put sand in our eyes and teeth! However us spearos are a tough bunch and we pulled through to make it happen!
What was also cool to see were all the new faces and some new youngsters entering for the 1st time which bodes well for the sport of spearfishing here in KwaZulu Natal.
